  ABOUT BÖLL NIGERIA

The Heinrich Böll Foundation (/Stiftung) (HBF/S), named after the German Nobel Prize winner in literature who stood for the values of peace and social justice, is associated to the German Green Party. In Germany and abroad, the main objectives of the Foundation are the promotion of a vibrant democracy, an engaged civil society, social justice, gender democracy, universal human rights and sustainable development.

The Foundation is active world-wide with more than 28 regional and country offices. It is active in Nigeria since 1994 and established a Nigeria Country Office in Lagos in May 2002.
Programmes on women’s rights, good governance and conflict management form the core of the Foundation's work in Nigeria. The democratic transformation of Africa since the 1990s has been a major focus of the Foundation, as have the rapid cultural changes occasioned by the transition from traditional forms of society to modernity. Here the Foundation's work concentrates on the particular opportunities and vulnerabilities of women.

HBF Nigeria co-operates on a long-term basis with Nigerian partner organisations, both at the grassroots and policy-making levels. Internationally, the Foundation provides an interface that links national and international debates, and supports training and exchange programmes for its partner organisations. In its Lagos office, HBF Nigeria organises workshops and media-oriented events on current issues, as well as capacity building workshops for non-governmental organisations exploring new fields of activities, helping to establish networks among themselves and with other actors, and supporting them with practical advice and training on project and financial management.
Currently, HBF Nigeria runs three programmes, supporting projects in the fields of

  • women's rights and women's empowerment,
  • democracy and good governance, with special focus on economic and structural reform ("economic literacy") and a new focus on climate change, and
  • conflict management.

HBF Nigeria receives the major part of its funding from the German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development. Its work in Nigeria is based on a co-operation agreement with the National Planning Commission of the Federal Government of Nigeria, concluded in October 2001 and renewed in April 2007.
