Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, the Heinrich Böll Foundation is a political foundation from Germany< affiliated with the German Green Party Alliance 90/The Greens. Striving to promote democratic ideas, civil society and international understanding, the work of the Heinrich Böll Foundation centres on the core political values of ecology, democracy, solidarity and non-violence.
In co-operation with numerous partner organisations around the world, the Foundation in its international political education work aims to strengthen ecology oriented action and civil society through exchanges. The Foundation's 28 Regional or Country Offices worldwide function as hubs of these exchanges, maintaining close ties with their partner institutions, thus connecting debates being conducted in Germany and abroad.
Central to the Heinrich Böll Foundation's mission are educational programmes and activities. Additional instruments of international cooperation are study tours and political exchange programmes - which promote discussion and networking - and the training of activists primarily in developing countries. Abroad, the Foundation endeavours to take into account the regional diversity of development potentials and processes and cultural singularities. In the future, the Foundation's programmes will be increasingly conceived and formulated with different thematic foci within a particular region.

At present, the key themes of the Foundation's international work are gender democracy, ecology and sustainable development, the development of democracy, human rights and peace, media and critical public debate and culture and development.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation co-operates with over 150 partners in 50 countries, in most cases over a period of many years. In addition, the Foundation sponsors numerous meetings, conferences and seminars, visiting programs and training activities.
Co-operation with Africa has been strong since the inception of the foundation. Some 25% of the total overseas funds are dedicated to this continent, with an emphasis on gender issues and environmental justice, operating from offices in Addis Ababa, Lagos, Nairobi and Cape Town.
At the moment, the Foundation is represented by Regional or Country Offices in about 28 different countries.
